Marital distress is a psychological disorder that goes beyond ordinary relationship problems because it creates a dysfunctional interaction pattern affecting the entire marital system, known as the “système-couple.” Spouses remain together while trapped in recurring cycles of conflict that maintain tension without resolving disagreements. The systemic approach studies marital relationships through patterns of interaction, communication, and family roles rather than blaming individuals. When both spouses experience psychological distress, the couple becomes a closed system unable to adapt, weakening family cohesion. This study aimed to identify symptoms of marital distress and their effects on the marital bond and family members. A clinical interview with a couple was conducted, and the Spanier Marital Adjustment Questionnaire was administered. The couple scored 54 out of 160, far below the emotional divorce threshold of 70, indicating very low marital adjustment. Emotional divorce is a key symptom of marital distress and threatens family stability.
