The Role Of Elections In Shaping Algerian National Consciousness (1948–1954)

Authors : طاهرقوادري أحمد .

Abstract

Abstract: All those who witnessed the event agreed that the Ain Defla uprising was organized by activists of the Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties (MTLD). They had previously instructed their supporters to disrupt the electoral process, which the French administration attempted to manipulate through electoral fraud in order to preserve colonial rule. Their aim was to expose France’s policy of extending the lifespan of colonialism. The activists also ordered the burning of ballot boxes if the French authorities refused to permit free and fair elections. This period was characterized by an atmosphere of caution and repression, as party meetings were banned, newspapers were confiscated, and the number of arrests increased under the pretext of protecting French sovereignty.
