The medieval period was marked by events that had an impact on the history of humanity in general, and on Christian-Islamic history in particular. On the one hand, the world witnessed the emergence of Islam and its spread throughout the world, and the beginning of an era of flourishing Islamic society in various fields of science and knowledge, and the emergence of a constellation of scholars and thinkers who undertook their experiences, which served as a torch that illuminated the path of humanity. At that time, the Latin West was experiencing intellectual and cultural stagnation and decline following the fall of the western Roman Empire to the Germanic tribes, who thus had a major role in creating new powers in the West. In response, these circumstances paved the way for the emergence of another power: the Church and its clergy. The Church filled the resulting void, establishing itself as the guardian of Latin society, which could only see what it saw. This increased its power and prestige, especially after the popes consolidated their control. In the first millennium, society believed the end of the world was near and turned to asceticism in the hope of attaining salvation in the afterlife. Their pilgrimages to the Holy Land to atone for their sins increased, but their journeys gradually became more extreme until the pilgrims yearned to seize Jerusalem from the Muslims by force. They considered this a sacred religious duty, adopting the cross as their emblem and even sewing crosses on to their shoulder cloaks.
