"In this research paper, I shall address the theme of the Carthaginian noblewoman, tracing her role from the dawn of this civilization in 814 BCE to its fall in 146 BCE. It is widely recognized that women are a cornerstone of society, without whom its very existence would be untenable. Accordingly, the Carthaginian civilization accorded women a prestigious status—a fact that is hardly surprising given its foundation by Queen Elyssa (Dido), who sacrificed herself for its survival. From this legacy, the ideal of self-sacrifice for the safety of the homeland was born, a virtue embraced by all Carthaginian ladies. Historical sources recount how Princess Sophonispe entered into a diplomatic marriage and met a legendary end, swallowing poison to preserve her dignity and the sovereignty of her nation. Similarly, the wife of the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal shared this spirit of defiance; upon seeing her husband kneeling in supplication to the Romans to spare his life while Carthage burned under their yoke, she threw herself and her children into the flames, choosing a death of dignity over a life of dishonor."
