Bejaia is known in historical sources by the toponym Al Nasiria, which refers to the name of its founder Al Nasir ibn alnas Al-Hammadi, was the second capital of the Hammadid dynasty, as well as being one of the most distinctive cultural centres in the central Maghreb region during the Islamic era. The reason for this was its unparalleled cultural impact, which has led to a significant surge in artistic, architectural and urban creativity as well as the active scientific movement that the city experienced, which enabled it to compete with the major Islamic cities of the time in Andalusia and the Islamic East. This was made possible by a combination of geographical , historical and human factors, particularly the migration of Muslims from Andalusia to the town. Historical sources have praised this city and the level it reached during the Islamic era, and poets glorified it , providing us with wonderful descriptions of the splendour of its monuments, particularly palaces, gates and architectural ornamentations.
