Abstract: Reading is a precise neurolinguistic integration of visual processing and linguistic representations within specialized brain networks. Dyslexia is classified as a developmental disorder that impedes the acquisition of reading skills despite intact general intellectual abilities. One form of this disorder is visual dyslexia, which is associated with a deficit in the visual processing of written words and their integration with the linguistic system. This research paper explores the neural basis underpinning visual word recognition and the linguistic characteristics distinctive to this subtype, while emphasizing the role of visual-linguistic integration in typical reading from a neurolinguistic perspective. Accordingly, the study aims to deconstruct the neural architecture of visual word recognition and reveal the linguistic features of this disorder. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach based on a systematic literature review, integrating functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data with behavioral performance indicators, particularly eye-tracking data. The results indicate dysfunction in the activity of the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA) and its associated networks, leading to impaired rapid recognition and reduced reading fluency, as well as disruptions in visual guidance and temporal processing mechanisms. The paper concludes with the necessity of adopting a multidimensional, integrative explanatory model that transcends unidimensional approaches, thereby contributing to enhanced diagnostic tools and more precise, effective therapeutic interventions.
