The present research lies within the realm of interlanguage pragmatics. It aims at investigating the Algerian English as Foreign Language (EFL) students’ performance of gratitude speech act. It also addresses the learners’ performances in relation to their gender. Twenty EFL learners participated in this study and completed a written Discourse Completion Task (DCT) containing eight situations that differ in context and relationship type. The findings demonstrated a predominant reliance on using conventionalized forms, mainly through direct thanking, positive feeling and appreciation. Conversely, EFL learners appeared to be limited in the use of more complex strategies, such as indebtedness. The researchers observed a minimal gender difference with a statistically significant variation only on one situation. This suggests that contextual factors, such as social distance and familiarity, may play a focal role in shaping the gratitude strategy choice among male and female informants.
