The Child And The Digital Space: A Study On The Challenges Of Socialization From Parents’ Perspective

Authors : Talha Messaouda .

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to identify the main difficulties in the socialization of children amid the increasing use of social media platforms from the perspective of parents. It adopts a descriptive survey method, employing a structured questionnaire as a data collection tool administered to a purposive sample of 81 parents in the city of Biskra. The findings reveal multidimensional challenges, including the difficulty of convincing children to reduce their usage (36.8%), negative impacts on cognitive abilities—particularly memory and recall (85.2%), and a decline in family interaction (27.8%). The study also uncovers ethical and moral effects, such as imitating influencers (27.3%) and the use of inappropriate language (21.8%). It recommends strengthening family dialogue, enhancing the role of schools in media literacy education, and providing realistic alternatives to digital activities. This study contributes to understanding the contemporary challenges of socialization and offers practical guidance for families and educational institutions.
