The Oral-formulaic Theory For Medieval Chant And Beyond: A Case Study On Medieval Offertory And The Chinese Shijing

Authors : Huang Patrick .

Abstract

Based on the previous study of oral poetry tradition, the oral-formulaic theory can be an analytical tool for the study of medieval Western chants; however, such an approach may also be useful when studying music-poetic traditions in other cultures and other eras. In this article, I will start with a brief background introduction, followed by a literature review on the scholarly study and methodological approach of both oral-formulaic theory and the medieval chant system. Then, I will transcribe five 11th-century Aquitanian offertories as a case study, and analyse them by the aforementioned formulaic theory, then compare with the tradition of Shījīng chanting in early China, in order to further verify the effectiveness and limitations of this analytical method across various cultures.
