This paper analyses irrigated area dynamics in Algeria under water, energy, and climate constraints. Using an ARDL model on annual data for 1990-2023, it distinguishes short-run adjustment from long-run relationships. The results show strong persistence in irrigated area, consistent with irrigation as a slowly adjusting productive stock. Although the bounds test supports a long-run relationship, the individual long-run coefficients remain weakly robust and require cautious interpretation. In particular, solar radiation does not emerge as a robust direct determinant of historical irrigation expansion. These findings stress the importance of inertia, water governance, and long-term policy coordination.
