Abstract: The book called “Dîvânu Lugâti't-Türk” by the Uyghur linguist Mahmoud Al-Kashgari (5th century AH / 11 AD), is of great importance in Turkish studies in particular, and Islamic studies in general, as it is considered an important source for research into the history of the Turks, their languages, culture, civilization, sciences, industries, and social, political, economic and military life. Although the book was written in the fifth century AH (11 AD), it remained unknown to researchers for many centuries, so that they knew nothing about it except its name and the name of its author, until the beginning of the 20th century AD, when the only copy of it was discovered by a Turkish intellectual, Ali Amiri Effendi (1857-1924), and it was subsequently published in three parts between the years 1333-1335 AH / 1515-1517 AD, edited by Professor Kilisli Rifaat Bilge. The manuscript copy of the book is preserved today in the National Library in Istanbul, and its serial number among the Arabic manuscripts is (4189). In terms of general content, the book is a dictionary of Turkish words with their explanation in Arabic. Some of these words constitute geographical names for many places inhabited by the Turks during the author’s era, and they are distributed over a wide area in Central Asia, extending from China in the west to the borders of Iran and the Byzantine Empire in the west. This is in addition to a map of the world drawn by the author, specifying geographical locations and presenting it in the book. The names included in the book varied between the names of cities, villages, countries, seas, valleys, mountains, plateaus, plains, and so on. In view of the importance of the book in topographical studies related to the lands of the Turks in the 5th century AH / 11 AD, we decided to devote this intervention to introducing the aforementioned book, its author, and its findings on the subject we are dealing with, relying in this on the book itself on the one hand, and on some Turkish studies that Completed around it on the other hand.
