The Transition From French To English In Algerian Higher Education: Students’ Experiences And Language-related Challenges

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the challenges and experiences of Algerian higher education students following the shift from French to English as a medium of instruction. To achieve this, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 90 first-, second-, and third-year students majoring in Control Engineering at Ecole Nationale Polytechnique (ENP), and data were analyzed thematically. The results showed that students support the introduction of EMI, associating it with improved access to scientific knowledge. The study recommends targeted teacher training, interactive learning strategies, along with the gradual shift to the English medium of instruction.
