Oral exegesis refers to the verbal discourse through which an exegete addresses his audience to convey the meanings of the Holy Qur'an. It is perhaps the oldest form of tafsir, as it was the primary method used by the Prophet (PBUH) to clarify Qur'anic verses to his Companions. The most immediate impact of this type of exegesis is its accessibility to all social strata—both the scholars and the laypeople. It compels the exegete to observe the "requirements of the context" (muqtada al-hal), making him a witness to his era, as he directly engages with the most significant events, challenges, and developments of his environment. This lends oral exegesis a profound prestige, reflected in the standing of the exegete among the scholars of his time and country. An analytical examination of the heritage of exegesis in Algeria reveals a rich and abundant output. Scholars have relied on oral tradition since the arrival of Islam in Algeria; many began their work orally, explaining the meanings of the Qur'an, conveying legal rulings, and consolidating creedal tenets in the vernacular of the people. This includes the Mzabi dialect, a constituent of the Amazigh language. In the Mzab region, eminent scholars emerged who made the interpretation of the Qur'an in the Mzabi language the focal point of their reformist struggle (jihad). This paper seeks to introduce these scholars and their contributions to the service of the Holy Qur'an, representing a foundational step in a continuous effort to document oral exegesis throughout all regions of Algeria.
