The Effects Of Processing Instruction On The Use Of English Prepositions: From Input To Output

Authors : Reffai Hadjer .

Abstract

The present study aims to determine the effectiveness of processing instruction in developing EFL learners’ ability to produce selected English prepositions- in, on, at across temporal, spatial and abstract contexts. To reach this aim, an experimental study with a pre-test post-test research design has been conducted. Forty first year EFL students from the university of Skikda were assigned to one of the two groups: an instructional group who received the processing instruction and a control group who received traditional instruction. Both groups answered a pre-test, and an immediate post-test at sentence and discourse levels. The findings showed a significant improvement from pre-test to post-test in the production test compared to the control group. Based on the obtained results, some pedagogical implications have been suggested for EFL teachers on how to include Processing Instruction into classroom practice, benefit from its core principles, and raise students’ awareness of the faulty processing strategies in the use of English prepositions.
