Abstract: This research aims to study historical phenomena that have been widespread in the Mediterranean basin since ancient times, slavery and redemption, through a thematic analysis of the novel “Io Emmanuel. Servitore di Alì Piccinin" by Riccardo Nicolai. We aim to reveal the socio-cultural conditions of seventeenth-century Algiers given that the novel in question is mostly dedicated to the study of the life of Italian slaves in Algiers during the Ottoman occupation. The examination of the novel It also focuses on tracing the two aforementioned phenomena and the methods used for the ransom of prisoners. Riassunto: Questa ricerca intende studiare due fenomeni storici del Mediterraneo, la schiavitù e il riscatto, attraverso un'analisi tematica del romanzo ‘Io, Emmanuele. Servitore di Alì Piccinin’ di Riccardo Nicolai. Ci proponiamo di svelare le condizioni socio-culturali dell'Algeri del XVII secolo, dato che il romanzo in questione è principalmente dedicato allo studio della vita degli schiavi italiani ad Algeri durante l'occupazione ottomana. L'analisi del romanzo si concentra inoltre sulla ricostruzione dei due fenomeni sopra menzionati e sui metodi utilizzati per il riscatto dei prigionieri.
