This study examines the phenomenon of diglossia between Algerian dialect and standard Arabic in Ahlem Mostaghanemi’s novel “chaos of the senses” through a linguistic approach with a translation perspective. The study proceeds from a hypothesis that the alternation between the colloquial and academic linguistic levels is not arbitrary but is subject to semantic, emotional and effective functions. These functions play a role in the narrative phonetic construction and in strengthening the emotional charge associated with memory and identity. The study employs a descriptive, analytical and comparative method linked to textual analysis to uncover the role of the local Algerian dialect in embodying emotion and intimacy. It also highlights the challenges posed by linguistic diglossia in literary in literary translation. The study concludes that attempting to handle this linguistic phenomenon superficially leads to a loss of meaning and a disruption of the text’s aesthetic effect.
