Abstract

This study aims to clarify the importance of ecotourism in achieving sustainable tourism development, with a focus on the experience of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Previously, tourism demand in the Kingdom was mainly linked to Hajj, Umrah, and domestic tourism. However, the past decade has witnessed a qualitative shift in the tourism sector, represented by the launch of major tourism programs and projects that embrace the principles of sustainable tourism and resource management based on ecological regeneration. Ecotourism has emerged as one of the main pathways of developmental transformation in the Kingdom within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030, contributing to reorienting the tourism sector from a recreational activity into a driver of economic diversification and a means of preserving natural resources and cultural heritage. This transformation culminated in a record increase in the number of tourists, reaching 100 million visitors in 2023, with the target raised to 150 million tourists by 2030.
