Massinissa began to turn his attention eastwards towards the Carthaginian lands, after he had united Numidia and consolidated his authority over it, especially since the treaty of 201 BC. The borders between his kingdom and the Carthaginian possessions were not defined, but he was given the right to recover what his ancestors owned even within Carthaginian lands. He seized the first opportunity that was allowed to him and penetrated the region of Emporia in 193 BC. According to one historian, this operation was a test of the Carthaginian reaction and the position of the Roman Senate. The operations to recover lands by Masinissa continued. He ignored Carthage's complaint to Rome and the latter's attempts to calm the situation between the two parties, taking advantage of Rome's preoccupation with some external circumstances until the operations developed into battles between the Carthaginian and Numidian parties, which prompted Rome to intervene under the pretext of Carthage's violation of the terms of the 201 BC treaty. The importance of the subject lies in the fact that this Numidian Igled was considered the savior of his people from Carthaginian exploitation and all kinds of injustice practiced against them. On this basis, we pose the following problem: Masinissa's role in reclaiming his ancestors' possessions amidst the Carthaginian betrayal and its allies in the Massilian and Massicilian kingdoms, and his agreement to Roman friendship. The resulting conclusions are that the Carthaginians exploited the peaceful conditions in the Maghreb to expand at the expense of Libyan lands, transforming the region into a hotbed of external and internal warfare.
