This study examines the evolution of institutional quality in Algeria from 1996 to 2023 using the Worldwide Governance Indicators and explores its relationship with social capital and subjective well-being (SWB). The findings indicate persistent weaknesses in voice and accountability, regulatory quality, and corruption control despite modest improvements in rule of law and political stability. While human development indicators have progressed, institutional stagnation may limit trust formation and civic engagement, thereby constraining gains in life satisfaction. The results support the view that in rent-dependent economies, redistributive capacity can sustain material welfare without generating proportional improvements in institutional trust and social capital. Strengthening governance quality appears essential for enhancing long-term subjective well-being.
