The reverence and deification of the she-camel in pre-Islamic beliefs gave rise to a constellation of myths symbolizing the birth of new life and the struggle to affirm fertility-the sole beacon of hope against the looming threat of death and annihilation. From this perspective, this study seeks to unveil the systematic imagery of the she-camel’s motherhood, which reaches profound intensity in its symbolic union with another maternal figure within the poet’s mythic consciousness. This duality manifests through recurrent similes-sometimes linking the she-camel to the ostrich (evoking the Dhi‘laba motif, where the sacred animalistic maternal roles intertwine), and at other times depicting her as an ostrich whose eggs herald renewed life. Embedded within the she-camel’s motherhood is yet another sacred maternal archetype revered in pre-Islamic society-the date palm, a botanical symbol of abundance and life, sharing traits of fertility, benevolence, and generosity. The she-camel’s motherhood in pre-Islamic poetry assumes multiple dimensions, all converging upon the principle of fertility-ensuring the perpetuation of prosperity and generosity in the poet’s thought and discourse. This symbolic framework only achieves completion through its association with other sacred emblems (the bucket, milk, rainclouds), elevating the poet and forging life within his desolate reality.
