Foreign Direct Investment And Environmental Pollution In Mena Countries: Evidence From Static Panel Models (1991–2023)

Authors : Labed Rachida .

Abstract

This study examines the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on environmental pollution in (MENA) countries during 1991–2023 using static panel-data models. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions proxy pollution, with economic, energy-related, and demographic controls capturing regional structural characteristics. Pooled ordinary least squares, fixed effects, and random effects models are estimated, and Likelihood Ratio, Breusch–Pagan, and Hausman tests determine the most appropriate specification. Empirical results over the sample show a statistically significant negative association between FDI inflows and CO₂ emissions, supporting the Environmental Halo Hypothesis for MENA. Conversely, economic growth and trade openness significantly increase emissions, consistent with carbon-intensive expansion. Energy consumption and population growth are not statistically significant, while natural resource revenues are linked to lower pollution. Using an extended long-run panel and rigorous model selection, the study provides updated evidence and informs investment and environmental policies aimed at sustainable development and mitigating regional degradation.
