Accounting Measurement: Balancing The Reliability Of Historical Cost And The Relevance Of Fair Value — An Empirical Study From The Perspectives Of Academics And Practitioners

Authors : Daiboun Sahel Boudjemaa . Benbelkacem Sofiane .

Abstract

This study compares historical cost and fair value measurement and assesses how switching between them affects financial statements. Using the accounting conceptual framework, it surveys 120 academics and practitioners; 108 valid responses were analysed on a five-point Likert scale. The instrument is reliable (Cronbach’s α = 0.853). One-sample t-tests show agreement that historical cost remains a baseline ensuring objectivity and reliability (Mean = 3.65; t = 8.75; p < 0.001), while support is stronger for fair value as more responsive to price fluctuations (Mean = 4.08; t = 15.47; p < 0.001). Respondents also believe fair value enhances qualitative information characteristics and strengthens the perceived fairness and credibility of statements (Mean = 3.94; t = 11.44; p < 0.001). Overall, findings favour dual reporting that combines historical and fair values to improve comparability and decision usefulness, especially under inflation and exchange-rate volatility.
