During the Ottoman era (924-1245 AH / 1518-1830 AD), the city of Algiers reached a significant stage of development and prosperity that touched several fields, including architectural, artistic, and decorative development of religious architecture in general and mosques in particular. The city of Algiers in this period became known for the large number of its mosques, which still exist today. They were built in diverse, elegant, and distinctive styles, combining both aesthetic and functional aspects at the same time. In this research paper, we will address the mosques preserved in the city of Algiers from the Ottoman period to explore and study Islamic art and the aesthetic, artistic, and decorative value it contributed to its mosques, with a focus on practical examples represented by the Ketchaoua Mosque and the New Mosque. Since mosques were the most attended landmarks, their founders exerted great effort in constructing and decorating them. Because they serve as a model reflecting the state of architectural and artistic conditions in Algiers during the Ottoman era and the developments it witnessed, the importance of this topic becomes evident. We relied on the descriptive historical-analytical method to provide information and collect historical facts about these archaeological landmarks. To describe some examples of the mosques in the city of Algiers and the artistic decorative beauty they contain, and to analyze the artistic elements and investigate their aesthetic connotations, and to compare the technical methods used in executing the decorations between local influences and Ottoman influences, with the aim of understanding the mechanisms of cultural fusion and its reflection on mosque architecture, from here one can pose a central question that examines the aesthetics of Islamic decoration: To what extent did decoration contribute to imparting artistic significance to the mosques of the city of Algiers during the Ottoman era?
