Dictation, once a central activity in language instruction, has seen a marked decline in contemporary EFL classrooms, overshadowed by communicative and technology-driven approaches. This paper offers a reflective examination of dictation from the perspective of an Algerian EFL teacher, highlighting its pedagogical value in developing accuracy, listening comprehension, and integrated language skills. Drawing on the author’s classroom experience, the discussion identifies cognitive, institutional, and technological factors contributing to the marginalization of dictation, including project-based curricula, AI-assisted tools, and teacher perceptions of dictation as outdated. Through analysis, the paper demonstrates how Dictogloss transforms transcription into a collaborative, problem-solving task that fosters metalinguistic awareness, cognitive resilience, and autonomous learning. It further explores the role of dictation in cultivating intellectual ownership in the age of AI, showing that structured transcription exercises counteract orthographic passivity and reinforce formal accuracy. Ultimately, the paper advocates for reintegrating dictation as a dynamic, interactive practice that balances communicative freedom with structural discipline, preparing learners for academic and professional success.
