Aviation English Use In Operational Contexts In Algeria: A Mixed-methods Study Of Air Traffic Controllers At Houari Boumediene Airport

Authors : Sahnoune Nisrine .

Abstract

This study offers a novel contribution to English for Specific Purposes by examining English language competence, communication challenges, and training needs among air traffic controllers at Houari Boumediene Airport, Algeria, using a mixed-methods approach. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire with 30 ATC trainees and in-depth interviews with 10 experienced controllers. Findings reveal that most participants recognize the importance of ICAO-standard phraseology but struggle with listening comprehension—particularly due to unfamiliar accents, rapid speech, and real-time message processing under pressure. Notably, 80% reported inadequate preparation, having been exposed only to limited accents and lacking fluency in plain English. Participants emphasized the urgent need for more realistic training incorporating diverse international accents to prevent misunderstandings, especially in emergencies. The study recommends integrating simulation-based learning, ongoing language development programs, and digital tools to maintain consistent, safe, and effective communication skills throughout controllers’ careers.
