The Importance Of Euphemism As A Form Of Indirect Communication In Kabyle Discourse

Authors : Toumi Hocine .

Abstract

Abstract: Abstract: This article provides a systematic analysis of euphemistic expressions in Kabyle discourse, aiming to show how euphemism functions not only as a politeness strategy but also as a vital mechanism for sustaining social cohesion and community bonds. Drawing on 15 contextualised euphemisms, the study applies Watts et al.’s (1992) Discursive Approach to Politeness to examine how Kabyle interlocutors negotiate politeness in everyday interaction when addressing sensitive or taboo topics. The findings have shown that Kabyle speakers employ euphemism to manage social sensitivity and align with cultural norms, particularly in discussions of bodily functions, reproduction, physical appearance, and marriage. Because politeness is negotiated in discourse, euphemisms emerge as reflections of values embedded in Kabyle society, showing how speakers balance respect with communicative needs. The study hence makes significant contributions to cultural studies, pragmatic study of euphemism as well as communication studies, more generally.
