Abstract

Wrestling necessitates strict adherence to weight categories, prompting many athletes to engage in precompetition weight reduction. Rapid weight loss (RWL) is a common practice that negatively impacts performance and health. Conversely, gradual weight loss (GWL) (≤1 kg/week) is the optimal strategy for preserving lean mass and enhancing athletic performance in athletes. This study examined the relationship between the GWL protocol and the final rankings of the Algerian National Youth Wrestling Team. This descriptive study included 29 junior wrestlers (cadet category) from Greco-Roman, Freestyle, and Women's wrestling disciplines. Competitive outcomes were analyzed by comparing the observed medal rates with the reference win rate. The GWL protocol demonstrated a highly significant positive impact on male wrestlers in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle disciplines, indicating a strong association between the protocol and competitive success in these styles. However, the protocol did not yield significant improvements in women's wrestling. Thus, while GWL is highly effective for male youth wrestlers, its effectiveness may be discipline- or sex-specific.
