Power Without Partnership: Trump’s Foreign Policy In The New Multipolar World Order

Authors : Blanchet Chahira .

Abstract

This paper examines the Trump Doctrine in the context of the emerging multipolar global order, where U.S. dominance faces growing challenges from rising powers and shifting alliances. Rooted in the “America First” ideology, Trump’s foreign policy embraced unilateralism, skepticism toward multilateral institutions, and transactional diplomacy. While this approach sought to recalibrate U.S. commitments and prioritize national interests, it often alienated allies and undermined traditional partnerships. This study argues that Trump’s retreat from cooperative frameworks weakened the foundations of U.S. hegemony and accelerated the redistribution of global power. Methodologically, the research employs a qualitative, analytical approach, combining both primary and secondary sources. It also uses case studies—including the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, the World Health Organizations and the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) —to assess the impact of key foreign policy decisions under the Trump administration. Ultimately, the paper questions whether a great power can preserve global influence in a multipolar world without cultivating enduring partnerships.
