Acute Respiratory Distress In A Morbidly Obese Patient: Technical And Organizational Challenges

Authors : Choubane Nabila .

Abstract

Introduction: Morbid obesity increasingly challenges emergency departments due to structural and technical limitations affecting care delivery. Casereport: A 48-year-old man with morbid obesity (BMI > 40 kg/m²) was admitted for acute respiratory distress from severe pneumonia. Care was compromised by unsuitable equipment, difficult venous access, and inability to perform essential diagnostics. Orotracheal intubation was anatomically difficult. Despite ICU transfer and treatment, the patient died within 48 hours. Conclusion: This case highlights the urgent need for adapted hospital infrastructure, specific protocols, and targeted staff training to ensure appropriate care for obese patients.
