Researchers are required, when quoting others, to adhere to a sound and precise methodology. Every statement attributed by a researcher to a scholar or an Imam necessitates posing critical questions: Did the scholar truly say this? How exactly did he express it? At times, it is also essential to ask: When did he say it? And why did he say it? These methodological questions are indispensable for achieving the level of accuracy demanded in scholarly research. Accordingly, this study aims to identify the approaches that facilitate uncovering the original statements attributed to scholars. Not everything ascribed to a scholar—whether a saying or an action—is necessarily what he actually said or did. He may have said it, but within specific contexts and at a particular time bound by those circumstances; or he may not have said it at all, and so forth.
