"nafta" As A Turning Point: A Critical Review Of The Experiment’s Failures And The Fate Of Free Trade

Authors : Amir Samir .

Abstract

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) promised economic growth and shared prosperity for the USA, Mexico, and Canada. However, a critical analysis reveals significant failures. Economically, the agreement widened developmental gaps, particularly between urban and rural areas, negatively impacting wages and employment. Socially, trade liberalization led to increased internal migration and labor displacement. Environmentally, the failure to enforce natural resource protection protocols led to increased pollution. Dispute settlement mechanisms also raised controversy by giving multinational corporations extensive powers. This study examines these failures, focusing on their impact on labor, agriculture, and industry, particularly in Mexico, and discusses lessons for creating more fair and sustainable future trade agreements.
