The Maghreb, endowed with an exceptional prehistoric heritage, is home to major sites dating back to prehistory. In this region, human interest in aquatic environments is reflected through numerous neolithic sites located along the coast and coastal margins. These areas provided essential raw materials, served as privileged routes for mobility, and offered strategic locations for the settlement of upper pleistocene hunter-gatherer groups. The exploitation of marine resources intensified during the neolithic, as evidenced by the presence of fish remains, marine shells, and lithic and bone tools associated with fishing activities. This article presents archaeological data on the subsistence strategies of populations in northern Maghreb, based on the study of malacofaunal remains, navigation and exchange processes during the neolithic, and the physiological and cultural appropriation of aquatic environments by early human groups.
