The author's interest in studying archival documents began with his doctoral research, which led him to frequent national archives and libraries. His subsequent specialization in endowment (Awqaf) issues and local history further deepened his knowledge of archival collections related to Ottoman-era Algeria, where he discovered broad horizons for renewing his approach to Algerian history. His engagement with these archives resulted in numerous research papers and lectures (between 1977 and 2003), emphasizing the significance of such documents in academic research. Throughout his long, arduous, yet rewarding research career, the author became well-acquainted with the primary locations of Ottoman documents. In this article, he presents their most important collections and provides a general overview of their contents, whether those housed in Algerian and French archives or those preserved in the Ottoman Archives in Istanbul, which serve as the primary source.
