The Social Representations Of Migration And Their Relationship To Psychological Alienation And Identity Formation Among The Algerian Elite: A Socio-psychological Approach

Abstract
Migration remains the most complex social phenomenon, bringing predominance to many features- economic, political, and cultural attributes. However, adopting a social-psychology approach does render the phenomenon easy to understand. It would bring to light the forms of thought and the images formed in collective consciousness. The research in question will be to study such social representations on migration which the Algerian elite has through a socio-psychological lens illuminating how notions of identity, belonging, and recognition are reflected in psychological attitudes and justifications with which migration is viewed. Additionally, the paper aims at highlighting how the representations are built on elite consciousness, and the contradictions in them regarding individual dreams and national belonging, and between competence values and loyalty to the homeland. The analysis draws on key concepts in social psychology: social identity, cognitive dissonance, social comparison, and stereotypes.
