Malek Bennabi's Concept Of Society Versus Western Conceptions: A Sociological Comparison

Authors : Yahiaoui Rabah .

Abstract

Abstract : This article compares Malek Bennabi's concept of society—rooted in civilizational spirituality and a unifying religious idea—with Western theories (e.g., Comte, Durkheim, Marx, Weber), which emphasize material, structural, or symbolic foundations. Bennabi views society as a dynamic entity driven by collective purpose, contrasting with Western secular, functionalist, or conflict-based models. The study underscores his unique ethical-spiritual framework, offering an alternative to dominant sociological paradigms. It advocates for rethinking sociological categories through indigenous intellectual traditions to address contemporary Muslim societies’ crises of meaning and identity.
