Descartes was able to establish a natural philosophy, or a particular physics, without separating himself from the conditions of the era in which he lived—conditions that shaped a physics that could, at the very least, be described as a rational and metaphysical physics. This is what made him and his philosophy among the most controversial figures in the history of philosophy. Descartes’ excessive engagement with metaphysics rendered his method often obscure and, in many cases, lacking logical rigor. Consequently, his physics remained a purely theoretical science, limited to defining concepts such as motion, the divisibility of matter, and so forth. Yet physics, as a practical science, should have moved toward the particular—that is, toward concrete reality.
