The Commercial And Cultural Relations Of The Almohad State With The Islamic World

Since the Almohads declared the Caliphate in 524 AH / 1130 CE, under the leadership of Abd al-Mu’min ibn Ali al-Kumi from Tlemcen, who became the first Almohad Caliph after the founder of the movement, Mahdi Ibn Tumart al-Susi al-Masmudi, they managed to unite the Maghreb and al-Andalus under one rule. The Almohads saw themselves as rightful leaders of the Islamic world. This led to rivalry with the declining Abbasid Caliphate in the East and opposition to powers loyal to it, such as the Ayyubids in Egypt and the Banu Ghaniya (the remnants of the Almoravids) in the Balearic Islands. Despite political tensions, commercial and cultural exchange between the Maghreb and the Eastern Islamic world did not cease. These interactions continued and even extended toward the Western Sudan, especially the Kingdom of Ghana.
