The Psychological Functioning Of Recidivists

Authors : Drissi Toufik . Khiat Khaled .

Abstract

This study aims to clarify the specificity of psychological functioning among recidivists by employing the clinical method. Adopting a clinical case study approach, the research utilized clinical interviews and the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) as the primary projective tool, along with the analysis of projective stories. The objective was to identify internal conflicts, defense mechanisms, and the strength of the ego in coping with social and familial pressures. The findings revealed a complex interplay between feelings of guilt, power dynamics, and the influence of family and societal expectations. Notably, defense mechanisms such as repression, sublimation, and rationalization emerged as key strategies for managing these pressures. Furthermore, the case demonstrated fluctuations in ego strength, oscillating between resilience and hesitation when faced with challenging situations. These results underscore the importance of addressing internal psychological conflicts and enhancing both family and social support within reintegration programs, as such measures are vital for reducing the risk of recidivism and promoting successful adaptation post-release.
