Between Reading And Interpretation: Stanley Fish And Umberto Eco

Authors : Souilah Samira .

Abstract

Literary reading transcends the boundaries of simple linguistic decoding and evolves into a creative, interpretive act in which the reader actively participates in the construction of meaning. To interpret is to engage in a genuine dialogue with the text—bridging its silences, illuminating its ambiguities, and uncovering implicit dimensions that extend beyond the literal sense. This process is inherently subjective, shaped by the reader’s cultural background, historical context, and personal sensibility, as well as by the purpose of reading and the analytical tools employed. Each act of reading is therefore unique, producing meanings that are never fixed but always provisional and open to renewal. The literary work, in this perspective, is not a static object containing a single truth; rather, it is a dynamic space of polysemy, a field of multiple and renewable significations. Through the diversity of interpretations, the text is continually enriched, revitalized, and reimagined. Far from exhausting the work, interpretation multiplies its possibilities, ensuring that literature remains a living discourse—capable of being rediscovered and reinterpreted across different times, cultures, and communities of readers
