The study of African political systems constitutes a central theme in the field of political science and international relations. It focuses on analyzing and interpreting the various elements involved in the political process, the dynamics of their interaction, and their overall impact on the political system. Accordingly, this paper aims to examine how political patronage and neopatrimonialism have influenced the nature of political systems in Africa. Employing a case study methodology and drawing on the framework of multi-variable and multi-level political interactions, the study concludes that the impact of political patronage and neopatrimonialism on post-colonial African political systems has contributed to the absence of a modern national state in Africa and the failure to organize state–citizen relations on the basis of citizenship.
