Summary: This study addresses the exploitation of natural raw materials in the development of crafts and industries during the Zirid and Hammadid periods in the Central Maghreb, between the 11th and 13th centuries CE (5th to 7th centuries AH). These raw materials included a wide variety of resources: metallic substances such as iron, lead, copper, and silver; agricultural products such as flax, wool, cotton, doum palm, and esparto grass; animal-based materials like various types of leather; and earthen materials such as pottery and ceramics. These resources were utilized to meet the needs of Hammadid society, whether in daily-use industries or in military and commercial production. The diversity and availability of these raw materials enabled the manufacture of a broad range of products that had significant economic and social benefits for the population. Forest wealth, in particular, was invested in establishing an industrial base for building war and trade ships, especially in the ports of Bejaia, Bona, and El Kala, which became key centers of maritime industry. Additionally, coral was extracted from the sea, particularly from the Marsa al-Kharaz area, and used in the production of jewelry such as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and other adornments. This interaction between industrial activity and creative craftsmanship—deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the society—played a fundamental role in advancing economic development and stimulating trade in the Central Maghreb during the Zirid and Hammadid eras.
