Navigating Moral Dilemmas: Teaching Ethics And Citizenship In Delta State’s Higher Education Institutions (heis)

Abstract

This study focused on exploring different approaches to addressing ethical and moral dilemmas in social studies, particularly in relation to the teaching of responsible citizenship in higher education institutions (HEIs) in Delta State, Nigeria. It was descriptive survey. The study population comprised the 828 management staff and Social Studies lecturers within the HEIs in Delta State. A sample of 394 combined management staff and Social Studies lecturers was proportionately selected and stratified randomized sampling technique was used. The study used structured questionnaires and 4 point Likert scale which was designed for the study and questionnaires was validated by three experts from the Faculty of Education, Delta State University, Abraka, and was piloted to obtain a reliability of 0.82. The study used z-test statistics to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was discovered that the managerial strategies of policy implementation at the school level were able to enhance the achievement of undergraduates, and strengthen responsible citizenship awareness in both staff and students. The anticipation of innovations that assist in the effective teaching and learning of responsible citizenship, the formulation of efficient social studies school programmes, the discussion of responsible citizenship with staff members and students to resolve the ethical and moral dilemmas, and the protection and effective utilization of social studies teaching and learning facilities. Among the findings, the researcher proposed that the government, in collaboration with schools' management and the Delta State Ministry of Education, provide the management staff and social studies lecturers and students with regular in-service training on school management.
