Abstract: This paper examines the notion of madhhab adherence in Islamic jurisprudence from both an epistemological and methodological perspective, tracing its historical development and intellectual context within the Mālikī school. It argues that commitment to a legal school does not imply rigidity, nor does it exclude the exercise of juristic critique. The discussion opens with al-Laqānī’s well-known statement — “We are Khalīliyyūn, and if Khalīl errs, we err with him” — as a point of departure to explore the relationship between loyalty to the school and the practice of internal ijtihād. The study identifies the epistemic characteristics of Mālikī adherence and highlights the internal mechanisms of critique employed by leading Mālikī scholars. Through figures such as al-Qarāfī, al-Shāṭibī, and al-Laqānī, the paper illustrates how the Mālikī tradition managed to sustain methodological coherence while remaining responsive to emerging legal challenges. It further addresses the question of renewal in the context of modern nawāzil (novel legal issues): should renewal take place through detachment from the school, or through its reactivation from within? The paper maintains that renewal in Mālikī jurisprudence is best understood as an internal process grounded in the school’s own tools — namely maqāṣid al-sharīʿa (the higher objectives of Islamic law), maṣlaḥa (public interest), sadd al-dharāʾiʿ (blocking the means), and takhrīj (derivative reasoning). This internal dynamism enables the Mālikī school to function as a model of balanced critical commitment and adaptive flexibility. In conclusion, the study contends that Mālikī adherence represents an epistemological framework rather than a static traditional structure, and that juristic critique should be seen not as a departure from loyalty to the school, but as its most authentic expression. Keywords: Madhhab adherence, Mālikī school, juristic critique, legal renewal, epistemology of fiqh, maqāṣid al-sharīʿa, intra-madhhab ijtihād, contemporary nawāzil.
