Abstract

Unemployment and inflation are among the most pressing economic issues that have consistently burdened governments across different historical periods, as they serve as key indicators of a country’s economic performance and are considered global phenomena. The Maghreb countries were not exempt from these challenges, particularly during the 1980s, when they experienced sharp increases in both unemployment and inflation rates. This situation prompted the implementation of economic reform programs in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund to mitigate inflationary pressures. Within this context, the present study seeks to examine the relationship between unemployment and inflation in Maghreb countries over the period 1982–2023, using panel data analysis. The findings reveal a positive but weak correlation between the two variables, which stands in contrast to the predictions of conventional economic theory
