Abstract The environment and its key elements formed a central axis in shaping the consciousness and civilizational thought of Islamic society in the medieval period, especially in the Islamic Maghreb, which was distinguished by its unique geographical and climatic diversity. There, "air" was not merely a natural physical given but transformed into a subject for jurisprudential codification within the nawāzil (case-based jurisprudence) corpus, and into a procedure and practice in medicine and urban planning by scholars and physicians in the field of rational sciences. From this standpoint, the study of "air" transcends the contemporary ecological dimension to enter the core of the history of mentalities and the history of sciences. This is what this article attempts by proposing a central problematic: How did jurisprudential and scientific rational thought in the Islamic Maghreb address the issue of air? What were its scientific, environmental, and social dimensions in that civilizational context? To answer this problematic, the article traces the presence of the element of air in various intellectual and practical manifestations, starting from its foundational legal treatment in jurisprudence and nawāzil, through its applications in medicine and preventive medicine, and to what extent this interest reflected a comprehensive civilizational vision of the nature of the relationship between humans and their surrounding world. To answer this problematic, we will attempt in this article to present the various aspects addressed by Islamic thought in the Islamic Maghreb regarding the issue of air. We will begin by reviewing its existential importance, then present the various scientific aspects that dealt with the issue of air, such as discussing some air-related questions in Maghrebi jurisprudence and nawāzil, the way physicians dealt with it in preventive medicine and during pandemics and epidemics, and finally its reflections on lifestyle and human and individual behaviors.
