This paper attempts to unveil the way translators deal with hedges when rendering linguistic papers from English into Arabic and the extent of cultural filtering at work, if any. To answer this overarching question, this paper adopts a contrastive pragmatic approach. Three sets of articles are used: three full-length English articles, their respective translations, and three full length non translated Arabic articles in the same field by the same translators/linguists. The findings revealed that the translators retained most of the hedges, only slightly applying the cultural filter. The translated articles were found to contain more hedges than the translators’ originals and are thus more tentative and more engaging for the reader. The translators’ choices may be explained by their profile, cross-linguistic differences in hedging devices and extra-linguistic factors.
