Abstract

"The Revival of the Religious Sciences" is considered one of the most prominent works of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, which profoundly influenced religious and social thought in the Islamic West. Al-Ghazali presented a spiritual and intellectual project aimed at reforming religion by combining jurisprudence with Sufism, and theory with practice—a synthesis that strongly resonated within the Maghrebi context, which was undergoing significant intellectual and political transformations. In Morocco and al-Andalus, zawiyas and educational institutions adopted Ihya’ to orient religious discourse toward ethical and spiritual dimensions. The book had a deep impact on many Maghrebi scholars, who dedicated themselves to explaining, teaching, and even abridging it to make it more accessible to the general public،. Despite its wide acceptance, the book faced opposition from certain rigid juristic circles, who perceived its content as a threat to their political interests. At times, this opposition led to the banning or burning of the book. However, these objections did not prevent its continued influence and dissemination; rather, they brought more attention to it. Thus, al-Ghazali’s thought—embodied in Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din—became an integral part of the religious and cultural fabric of the Islamic West, materializing in the form of various Sufi movemenInfluencests that drew from his vision
