Authors : Ait Allek Chafiaa . Ammar Fatiha .

Abstract

This research addresses the topic of water and its role in economic life during the Roman period as a vital element and considerable driver of this sector. Water is a fundamental resource required for various purposes (drinking, irrigation, bathing etc…). Its importance extended however during the Roman period to various crafts and industries, where it was used to supply both the internal and external markets, in addition to its significant role in transportation. Water was a significant financial asset as well, contributing to revitalizing the economy by enabling the acquisition of various raw materials and the creation of job opportunities, as well as a water exploitation tax, referred to as Vectigal Aquae, imposed by the Roman authorities and applicable to the use of both public and private water sources, as well as for delivery services. This research aims to highlight the role of water in economic life, both in urban and rural settings as well as its contribution to their developpment and prosperity. It also seeks to examine its impact across all economic fields, such as agriculture (through irrigation), industry (through craft and industrial activities), as well as water transportation, and finally to address the tax policy implementation or financial charges on water consumption and delivery service. The key issue of this research revolves around the role of water in promoting the economy, requiring a range of water facilities for collection and distribution, and the use of water in both natural environments and various craft activities, as well as water taxation and transport.
