The Excessive Use Of The Veto Power And Its Impact On Threatening International Peace And Security

Authors : Bennouli Zarzour .

Abstract

The right to veto is considered one of the most prominent political tools used within the United Nations Security Council, as the UN Charter granted this exclusive privilege to the five permanent member states. This has enabled them to obstruct any draft resolution, even if it is supported by an overwhelming majority of member states. The right to veto was originally established to guarantee balance among the major powers and prevent the outbreak of widespread conflicts. However, with the passage of time, it has become an influential tool used according to the national and strategic interests of these states, which has made it a highly controversial topic in the international arena. As a result, the veto power continues to be the most significant challenge confronting the Security Council. Its frequent use has hindered the Council’s operations and blocked it from fulfilling its primary goal of preserving global peace and security since its establishment
