Abstract: This study aims to introduce the significant contribution of one of Algeria’s eminent twentieth-century scholars, ʿUmdat al-Athbāt fī al-Ittiṣāl bi-l-Fahāris wa-l-Athbāt (“The Principal Record of Connection with Catalogues and Authoritative Registers”), It is authored by the distinguished Muḥammad al-Makkī, widely known as Ibn ʿAzzūz. The work meticulously documents the author’s chains of transmission (asānīd) and formal authorizations (ijāzāt) pertaining to approximately 148 scholarly catalogues (fahāris) encompassing an extensive corpus of works across diverse disciplines. It was commissioned at the request of his colleague, the Moroccan scholar Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Ḥayy al-Kattānī . The text epitomizes a bibliographical tradition authenticated through direct transmission (riwāya)—a literary form that attained particular prominence in the later Islamic centuries, especially among scholars of the Maghrib and al-Andalus, where Algerian scholars distinguished themselves as leading contributors. It functions as both a scholarly register and an intellectual autobiography; the work preserves the cumulative fruits of the author’s lifelong pursuit of knowledge, recording oral and written authorizations received from over eighty teachers spanning the Islamic East and West. By contextualizing the text within the broader tradition of isnād-based scholarship, this paper aims to elucidate its intellectual value and to underscore the sustained Algerian engagement with transmission-based learning across different historical epochs.
